iPad Prototype without Home Button Revealed

In a deposition given last December, Apple’s Senior VP of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive disclosed that his team began work on the “035 mockup or prototype”- a preliminary iteration of the iPad – as early as 2002.

Steve Jobs reported back in 2010 that the idea for the iPhone had come from the development of an un-released tablet, which featured “a glass … multitouch display that you could type on with your fingers” and a UI with rubber band scrolling. The grainy photos in Ive’s deposition, taken “sometime between 2002 and 2004,” show off a glass touch-screen much like the first iPad’s, without the Home button.

The glossy white back of the device, reminiscent of early iPods or the bottom half of an iBook, and sporting the Apple logo at its center, had a standard headphone jack and what looks like the 30-pin USB port that has since become Apple’s standard.
